An Armenian Preschool For The Millennium

pre_school.gifThe St. Stephen's Armenian Preschool was founded in 1984, as a private, non-profit, bilingual Preschool. The Massachusetts Office of Child Care Services (OCCS) licenses the Preschool center. The curriculum offers a stimulating, nurturing, and educational programs for children from the ages of two years nine months to five years. The hours of operation are 8:30 A.M. - 2:30 P.M.  Extended Day is available. The majority of our Preschool graduates continue their education in our Kindergarten and Elementary School.

Our goal is to help each child realize his/her full potential and self-worth. Each child's positive self-image together with ethnic background is of primary importance. The teachers emphasize problem solving, reasoning, and values of fair play, self-reliance and sense of responsibility within each child. An extensive curriculum filled with art, music, movement, story telling, reading, dramatic play, puppet shows, math and science provide age-appropriate opportunities for the children to express themselves creatively and develop their skills.

pre_school.gifOur preschool teachers are experienced and state certified. The student/teacher ratio allows us to meet children's needs, either individually or in small groups. Frequent staff meetings provide opportunities for curriculum planning and discussion of classroom issues. Staff professional development is furthered through attendance at early childhood workshops and professional development.

The curriculum is carefully designed to meet the individual needs and interests of the children and to stimulate learning in all of the developmental areas: physical, social, emotional and intellectual. This development is fostered through thematic units and daily activities, free play, music, and outdoor play, as well as through enrichment programs or field trips. A nutritious snack is served in the morning and afternoon.

The preschool has six bright, spacious rooms each equipped with a private lavatory, designed for preschoolers. A large carpeted area, allows room for play with large and small wooden blocks, accessories for blocks and dramatic play, including floor trains, small construction materials, puppets, a doll corner and a play kitchen. There are sand tables, floor and table puzzles, interesting manipulative toys and games as well as a book corner for quiet contemplation and browsing. For outdoor play, there is an adjoining, fenced playground, which has been carefully planned to provide lots of space for outdoor activities. It has the ever-popular Child Life Company wooden climbing structure with slides, swings and walking bridge.

This is the first ever Armenian Toddler Music & Movement program of its kind. Sponsored by St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School and the Watertown Family Network. Each Wednesday morning, the children enjoy a special Armenian program which helps them develop their listening and Armenian language skills as well as their creativity and physical coordination through an engaging musical experience. Adults enjoy the companionship, support and joy of interacting with their child in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Mayrig & Me instructor presents Armenian songs, instrumental music, puppets, instruments and movement materials for the children to enjoy during the 40 minute program. The instructor interacts with each child involving them and engaging them with the music, playing instruments with them, while the children also interact with their mothers.

The Fall program currently offers two classes, 9:30am & 10:30am. Currently both classes are full for the Fall session. Registration for the Winter program will begin in late November. If you are interested in the Mayrig & Me program, please call Assistant Principal, Heather Krafian at 617 923-0501 to register.
